I AM ALIVE: WORLD PREMIERE JULY 15TH IN CLEVELAND, OHIO

A little over a month ago I spoke briefly about an up and coming zombie short film from Justin Buckner titled I AM ALIVE.  It seemed to have sparked some interest from some of you readers and luckily for you, I've got the inside scoop on how you can find a way to see it!

Tickets will be available for $6 each and can be purchased on www.beachlandballroom.com or else tickets are available for purchase from the cast and crew. I've already got my ticket scored away and this event looks promising and more than worth the six dollar entrance fee.  All of the proceeds from the event will go towards entry fees to submit I AM ALIVE to the film festival circuit.  If that doesn't win you over, all of the cast and crew will be at the screening to party it up with the attendees; meaning yes, you can party with the zombies.

Along with the premiere screening of I AM ALIVE they will be showing a couple of other short skits from these fine folks that have been filmed over the last year. The director's band, Galactic Moustache, (that's a hell of a name) and their production group Studio on Mars have been creating music videos and web based skits and will screen some of the most popular shorts.

Following the screening there will be live music performances by 

Presque Vu and Galactic Moustache.

CRYPTICON'S GHOUL GIRLS INVADE SEATTLE

Seattle, Washington is home to some of the coolest and most interesting people in the entire country, and the horror scene is no exception.  With the world famous Seattle branch of Crypticon (serving as The largest horror convention in the pacific northwest) just around the corner, Niki Crypt Giallo has taken the initiative to develop a hell of a promo team.  This year, Seattle Crypticon will be invaded by their very own set of horror women with The Ghoul Girls.  Not only has Nicki developed a super group of ladies that are willing to help spread the word of the convention, but they also actually give a shit about the genre they're representing.  I was impressed with the initiative she took making this group of ladies a reality and asked if she would share some insight. 

NCG: The goal of the Ghoul Girls is to spread the word about Crypticon Seattle. Cypticon Seattle is the North West's Premier horror convention. We are more than just beautiful faces, we are horror fans. We do this for the love of the genre. We can be found haunting events & conventions around the Seattle area spreading the horror gospel. Our first event will be this Saturday the 5th at the Comcast Arena in Everette for the Tilted Thunder Rail Birds Rollar Derby bout. We spread fliers, posters, etc. Think of us as your spooky promo girls. 

I thought of the idea when helping Justin [Giallo] spread the word & advertise. I thought "Hey! We should have promo "ghouls" to spread the word. I mean there's all kinda of promo girls from Red Bull girls, to the Three Olives girls. What better way to get people interested than to have fun, spooky, beautiful girls!?" I hand picked the girls...for their love of horror to their other talents. The current members are, Brandy Rage, who is a local Renagade Bike girl. Ava D Jor who is a VERY talented burlesque performer for the Grity City Sirens Burlesque troop. Abbey Synthe, who was the founder & creator for the Seattle based "Gorelesque" troop. Lolita Lament who is a part of the Hearse Club of Seattle, along with Abbey Synthe. ( So you can see us cruisin around in our own version of the Macabre Mobile lol) Candy Ghiest who is new & upcomming in the horror community. Kiki De Ville who has her own photography company "Kiki D Photography." Lastly Muah! Niki Crypt, horror aficionado & former fetish model featured in the book series from Kaos 8 "Through the Eyes of a Pervert" about showing the beauty & art within sexuality, perversion, erotica, & more. Mixing pinup, alternative, art nude, erotic, & other styles into a seamless bit of photography that truly is amazing. 

The main thing I look for when looking for "Ghouls" is the horror knowledge. You can't just walk the walk, you have to talk the talk as well, meaning we are deffinately more than beauty, we know our shit as well. While at the convention you can stop by to meet us, think of us as an informatiom booth for the convention as well. Whether you need to know what time a panel or screening starts, to SWAG, or just wanting a picture with the offical Crypticon girls, we are the ghouls to turn to. :)

UTTERLY ALONE: THE ARTISTIC PROWESS OF MEGAN LARA

Megan Lara is an incredibly talented artist who has proven herself time and time again when it comes to subtle beauty in genre reference work. Megan is a 23 year-old illustrator with a ridiculous fixation on pop culture. CHICAGO FEAR FEST: THE SECOND CITY'S NEWEST HORROR EXTRAVAGANZA

If there is one thing I've learned from my short time dabbling in the horror blogosphere, it's that Chicago is slowly but surely climbing up the ranks to becoming one of the strongest epicenters for all things horror.  Chicago may be known as the “Second City”, but Chicago-based Horror Enterprises Flashback Weekend (Horror Conventions & Drive-In Film Fests), Horror Society (web based horror news & Horror film fests), Sinister Visions (horror website & graphic design), and Zombie Army Productions (Haunted House design & film production), are working to establish Chicago as the 1st city of Horror!

April 13th and 14th 2012, the four premiere Chicago horror groups and the Muvico Theaters are presenting us with CHICAGO FEAR FEST.  It will be a two day indie horror film festival with selections screened at quite possibly the most beautiful theater in the Chicagoland area, The Muvico Theaters Rosemont 18 in Rosemont, IL.

CHICAGO FEAR FEST will showcase the very best in cutting edge independent horror films. The lineup will include short films, feature films, celebrity guests, panel discussions, and Q & A’s. Festival after-parties will be held in Bogart’s, a full service bar and grill located on the second floor of the Muvico Theaters Rosemont 18.

Films will be judged based in 3 different categories: Best Feature, Best Short and Audience Favorite. The winning director of each category will be invited to appear as a featured celebrity guest at the Flashback Weekend Chicago Horror Convention to be held August 10-12, 2012 in Rosemont, IL.

CHICAGO FEAR FEST will be a celebration of the art of indie horror film making by encouraging and supporting independent filmmakers from around the world. GPOY

For all of you n00bs out there, GPOY stands for "gratuitous picture of yourself".  In tumblr world, you put GPOY under anything that remotely reminds you of yourself.  For example, if I saw a picture of a small rodent shoving acorns into its cheeks while I was shoveling Ben & Jerry's Schweddy Balls into my mouth, I would reblog the photo and tag it "GPOY".  It also can be used literally, when you post an actual picture of yourself.  Why the hell am I rambling on about this?  Because I want you to be my friend on tumblr!  I've had a couple of people ask if I have one, and I do!

On another note, one of my professors was selling his collection of nearly 2000 titles for only $4.50 a pop.  Needless to say, I scooped up some of the good ones.  He had a ton more that I would love to add to my collection, but these four seemed like a necessity.  Don't shoot me, but I really didn't own my own copy of any of these films.  Now that I have them, I am a much much happier person. 

SUPPORT THE FUTURE OF CHICAGO FILMMAKING: 'THE OCTOBER CRISIS' BY MARC WILKINSON

Hailing from the Illinois River Valley, Marc Wilkinson is a film student at Columbia College, beginning his senior year.  With a lifelong love affair with filmmaking, Marc has been making his own dramatic shorts since 2006, along with viral videos, music videos and commercials. His short film Sardines premiered at the Illinois International Film Festival last year, but the last several years have been spent directing shorts, writing features, and crewing on advanced project. Marc's next project is a short film entitled The October Crisis.  Once completed, he will be taking the short with him to L.A. in hopes of turning it into a feature film.  While Marc isn't creating a horror film, he has shown promise in his film making and is more than deserving to earn a featured spot here at Day of the Woman.  I was able to find out first hand what this film is hoping to convey, and I must admit...I'm excited for it.

"The October Crisis" was created first by deciding on a theme, as all my work is. While listening to the song "The Last Lost Continent" by La Dispute, I began wondering what drives a person to want to kill, and not only kill, but kill passionately. From my observation of the world, I often see the root of this to be differences in personal belief - belief without logic or reason. But I didn't see religion as the problem - I saw people taking their beliefs to the extreme as the issue. So I started crafting this film about what happens when you let what you believe about a situation convince you to act violently, with religion as the setting. This turned into my feature screenplay, "The October Crisis". From there, I decided the best way to eventually get the feature made would be to shoot a part of it to show - but I didn't jsut want a scene or an opening. So I retailer ed some of the films core moments into a 12 page short that gives us the characters, the messege, and the tone in a self contained story that doesn't give away the overall plot or climax of its feature counterpart.-Marc Wilkinson
